Installing well water treatment: the plumbing, the drain, the settings
Sequence is everything on a well. Sediment first so it does not blind the media downstream, then iron and sulfur, then softening, then disinfection. Get the order wrong and the last stage does the work of all of them and fails early.
Well water is not static. Rainfall, seasonal water table changes and nearby land use all move the numbers, which is why an annual test matters far more on a well than on municipal supply.

FAQ
Well Water Treatment questions, plainly answered
How is well water treated?
In sequence, and the sequence matters more than any single unit. Sediment comes out first, then iron and sulfur are oxidized and filtered, then the water is softened if it is hard, then disinfected if there is bacteria, then polished for drinking. A softener put in front of an iron problem fouls within months. The test says what you have; the sequence follows from it.
Why does my well water smell like rotten eggs?
Hydrogen sulfide — sulfur — dissolved in the water, common in wells across the surrounding counties. It is treated by oxidizing it and filtering the result, with an aeration or a chemical-free oxidizing filter depending on the level. Iron often comes with it. It is a nuisance rather than a health issue, and it is one of the more satisfying problems to fix.
